5 Steps To Take Before Starting A Weight Lifting Program

Starting A Weight Lifting Program

Just getting started with your fitness journey? If you’ve never been on a weight lifting program before but are ready for forge your path to doing so, it’s important that you go about things in the correct manner.

Weight lifting has many benefits to offer, but you do need to be prepared. Let’s go over five steps to take before you begin so that you can set yourself up for maximum success.

Step 1: Get Your Doctor’s Go-Ahead

Medical DoctorFirst things first, make sure that you have your doctor’s go ahead. Strength training is going to place a good amount of stress and strain on your body, so it’s important that you are ready to deal with this.

If you are suffering from any pre-existing health conditions, such as blood pressure or heart disease, this will be a very important step for you.

Don’t think it’s perfectly safe to continue. Always get the ‘okay’ from a medical professional first.

Step 2: Book A Session With A Trainer

Next, consider booking a session with a trainer. This will be important because he or she can help you learn how to use proper form, which will then pave your path for success.

Too many beginners get started on their own, using poor form and techniques, which then grow into a habit.

If you aren’t lifting with good form, not only will you not see results, but you could put yourself at risk for injuries as well. Bad habits are hard to break, so really pay attention to getting good form down first before progressing on.

Step 3: Set Smart Goals

The next important step is to set some smart goals for yourself. What do you hope to accomplish with your program? Write those goals down somewhere that you will see them daily.

This will not only help you stay motivated, but it’ll give you a very clear vision for yourself on where you want to go.

Make sure that your goals are realistic for you however. If you need help with this, ask your trainer.

Step 4: Get Your Gear

The fourth step is to get your gear. You don’t need much for strength training apart from a good pair of running shoes, some comfortable, but not too baggy clothing, along with possibly your music player.

Then of course, you’ll either need to be in a gym of sorts, or have purchased some type of resistance for use at home (resistance band, dumbbells, etc.).

Once you have these items, you’ll be all set.

Step 5: Find Time In Your Schedule

Finally, the last step is to find time in your schedule. When will you be doing your workouts? Schedule them in. If you don’t make time for these workouts and book them in like you would any other important meeting, chances are, you won’t stick with them.

Don’t forget this last step. Try if you can to keep them at the same time daily as well as that will help you get into the habit of doing them on a regular basis.

If you follow these five steps, you can feel good that you are ready to move forward and begin your strength training program.
